WELCOME FELLOW ALUMNI AND GUESTS
Once those graduation caps are tossed in the air, that is the moment in time when many teenagers run like the wind from high school, never to look back. We are joyous that in the heart of the West River Valley that is not the case. From today looking back over the years, you can see the generations that have grown and learned at Leland and Gray. Grandparents and parents who send their children off to the same school, to enter the same doors that they themselves entered not so long ago.
Leland and Gray Union High School is one of the oldest educational institutions in the State of Vermont. Established in 1833 by the Baptist Association, the school was named Leland Classical and English School in honor of Aaron Leland, a minister who had endeared himself to the people of southern Vermont. The school building, erected in 1834, was a two-story, rectangular, brick structure surmounted by a wooden tower. At the time of the Civil War, the Seminary went through a period of great financial hardship. In response to the generosity of Deacon Samuel Gray, the name of the school was changed to Leland and Gray Seminary in 1860.
In 1970, 137 years after the seminary was established, the present secondary school was erected by the newly formed Leland and Gray Union High School District. Building on its unique history and community commitment, Leland and Gray continues to offer public education of high quality to the people of five union district towns and other communities.
The Leland and Gray Alumni Association lives to breathe life into the bond that connects us - to the school and to each other. We constantly seeks ways to nurture them. Every year during the Alumni week, we offer several events to celebrate our togetherness as well as welcome the new graduating class into our fold. This includes a Luncheon and Golf tournament. In addition, we continue to raise money for the Alumni Scholarship that every year is given to a promising student entering into a four year college. At this time, we are not able to schedule the parade due to lack of volunteers. Pease help support these events and activities by sending in your Dues.
Our hope is to continue to grow and to find new ways to shine the light on the little place we all have grown to love, the home of the Rebels, Leland and Gray.
